Mission

The Linda Loring Nature Foundation preserves the biological diversity of its 275-acre property on Nantucket and connects people of all ages to nature through outstanding environmental education and research.

2020 Strategic Plan

Beginning in early 2020 the Strategic Planning Committee of the LLNF began the process of reviewing the mission statement and developing a shared vision, with strategies to achieve that vision, as we move into the new decade and meet the challenges and opportunities facing us. Together we developed three key critical components of our work: Stewardship and Conservation, Research, and Education. Together these form the heart of our work.

Stewardship and Conservation

Apply best stewardship practices to protect and enhance the assets of the property in a manner supported by the Foundation’s research and education, while sustaining native biodiversity by:

  • Creating a comprehensive, adaptive management plan informed by research and knowledge from practitioners in the field, while also incorporating innovative ideas to attain conservation goals;

  • Limiting and mitigating threats to the native biodiversity;

  • Providing an undisturbed, undeveloped area for scientific research, environmental education, and passive recreation;

  • Working within the framework of our conservation restriction to become a leader in sustainable practices and accessibility.

Research

Lead and facilitate ecological research focusing primarily on the Foundation’s property and the adjacent Long Pond by:

  • Fostering targeted research that contributes to the stewardship and education mission;

  • Expanding research tools and techniques to meet new opportunities for meaningful discoveries in the natural sciences;

  • Coordinating LLNF’s research with multi-stakeholder, island-wide efforts;

  • Building relationships that include academic affiliations, both on and off island, to foster a research community;

  • Mentoring students in all aspects of their research.

Education

Provide outstanding environmental educational programming focusing primarily on the Foundation’s property and Long Pond as classroom and laboratory by:

  • Strengthening current core programming for preschool through high school students;

  • Increasing program offerings for adults;

  • Developing in-depth, process-based, learning and mentoring experiences for a selected number of high school and college students;

  • Being a leader of sustainability education and community climate resiliency, adaptations, and solutions;

  • Integrating on-site research with all our education programs;

  • Maximizing the education experience of the visitor to the property to create a community of users that shares a connection to the natural world and to the Linda Loring Nature Foundation.
