World Migratory Bird Day is an international effort to raise global awareness of the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.

Every year people around the world take action and organize public events such as bird festivals, education programs, exhibitions and bird-watching excursions to celebrate WMBD.

Each year, WMBD takes on a different theme relevant to challenges and threats facing migratory birds. 2023 highlights the importance of water to the vast majority of migratory birds. These birds rely on aquatic ecosystems like inland and coastal wetlands, rivers, lakes, streams, marshes, and ponds for feeding, drinking, or nesting, and also as places to rest and refuel during their long journeys.

World Migratory Bird Day activities take place in many different countries and places across the globe - united by a common campaign and theme. Here on Nantucket, LLNF, the Nantucket Land and Water Council, Nantucket Conservation Foundation and the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station are teaming up to offer a morning of birding and conversation to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day.

8-9:30 AM: Birding and exploring the habitats around the Field Station

9:30-10:30 AM: Conversation and light refreshments
