Nature Ramble

Walking over our gently rolling trails, we’ll explore sandplain grasslands and coastal heathland habitats, and enjoy views of Long Pond and Nantucket Sound as we traverse a portion of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation's Eel Point Road property. We'll see what’s blooming, budding, flying, and crawling around the trails.

Each walk will be guided by experienced LLNF staff, however, our attention is dictated by the group’s interests and what nature offers that particular day. It's a great chance to learn more about the research, restoration, and stewardship activities around the property and ask your Nantucket nature questions.

Rambles are free to attend.

Walden Warming: Climate Change Comes to Thoreau’s Concord

Walden Warming: Climate Change Comes to Thoreau’s Concord

Join us for a free presentation with Dr. Richard Primack at Nantucket Historical Association’s Greater Light property.

Henry David Thoreau was a climate change scientist!

For the past 22 years, Professor Richard Primack and his team have been using Thoreau’s records from the 1850s and other Massachusetts data sources to document the earlier flowering and leafing out times of plants, the earlier flight times of butterflies, and the more variable response of migratory birds. Plants in Concord are also changing in abundance due to a warming climate.

What would Thoreau tell us to do about global warming if he were alive today?

About the Speaker

Richard Primack is a Professor at Boston University with a specialization in plant ecology and conservation. He has written four widely used conservation biology textbooks; local co-authors helped to produce 38 translations with local examples. He was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biological Conservation and served as President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. His research has been featured in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and National Geographic, and he is often interviewed on National Public Radio. Primack shares his research in the popular book Walden Warming: Climate Change Comes to Thoreau’s Woods.

This program is free and open to all.

Fall Nature Ramble

Join the Linda Loring Nature Foundation for a fall nature exploration!

Walking over our gently rolling trails, we’ll explore the fall colors of our sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands, and enjoy views of Long Pond and Nantucket Sound.

What’s a Ramble, you ask? Nature Rambles are loosely guided explorations, where our attention is dictated by the interests of the group and what nature offers that particular day.

We could see a plethora of caterpillars, notice wildflowers in bloom, or maybe even spot mammal tracks in the sand! We look up, down, and all around to see what’s still blooming, flying, and crawling around the property.

Rambles are free to attend.

Climate Change Nature Ramble

  • Linda Loring Nature Foundation (map)

Did you know that the Linda Loring Nature Foundation conducts research on and monitors the effects of climate change?

In celebration of Climate Change Awareness Month, join Dr. Sarah Bois, Director of Research and Education, for a climate change tour around LLNF. She’ll showcase LLNF research in action, demonstrate tools we can all use to track changes in our environments, and help participants identify climate change indicators.

How is climate change already affecting LLNF and the island? How is it expected to affect our flora and fauna in the near future? We’ll explore these topics as we tour the LLNF property, highlight areas potentially vulnerable to impacts of climate like sea level rise and warming temperatures, and discuss local efforts to mitigate for climate change effects.

We’ll “ramble” over our gently rolling trails, we’ll explore sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands, and enjoy views of Long Pond and Nantucket Sound. Our staff will also share the history of the LLNF property, current research projects, and management efforts. Bring your nature questions- discussion is encouraged!

Nature Ramble

Join the Linda Loring Nature Foundation for a nature exploration!

Walking over our gently rolling trails, we’ll explore sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands, and enjoy views of Long Pond and Nantucket Sound. There is deep joy in wandering the landscape, guided only by our attention— Nature Rambles are an opportunity to reconnect with this practice.

On a Ramble, we look up, down, and all around to see what’s blooming, budding, flying, and crawling around the property. Each outing is unique and loosely guided by what nature offers that particular morning- caterpillars, wildflowers, birds, and maybe even mammal tracks in the sand! Come by to see what’s out and about in nature.

Rambles are free to attend. Rambles are not geared towards children, though we do offer Family Explorations that are more suitable for young ones. See our event listing for registration.

Nature Ramble: BioBlitz Edition

Nature Ramble: BioBlitz Edition

This July, Rambles will feature a special opportunity to participate in our annual BioBlitz with the Nantucket Land Council!

What’s a BioBlitz, you ask? A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. We’re focusing on any species seen anywhere on Nantucket during the month of July. The BioBlitz is organized through a free app and website iNaturalist, which keeps a list of your observations and helps identify what you’ve seen with a community of scientists, hobby naturalists, and nature enthusiasts.

During July Rambles, we’ll detail how to use iNaturalist and give updates on the status of the BioBlitz with our friends from the Nantucket Land Council for our 3rd July BioBlitz together!

Rambles are free and open to all!
